Planning

The song that we have chosen to record a video for is "Ares" by Bloc Party. The reasons behind this choice were that we were all followers of the band, and all like the sound of the song as it was provocative and didn't have a music video to it already, and could lead to many possible types of music videos being created for it. It was in our group of four (myself, Hannah, Katie, and Amber) that we realised that this song would make a great abstract video due to the unique and violent music and lyrics that the song projected. Yet in order to make sure that we were eligible to use this song and create a video for it we first needed confirmation from bands record label Wichita. This email confirms the processes we took to ensure that we haven't copyrighted the song and have taken the correct legal procedures to enable us to use the song.

Below are the lyrics for Bloc Party's "Ares"

War war war war

I want to declare a war
My fist breaks your porcelain nose
There are other things that hands can do
To create or to destroy, mini gods and goddesses
First person singular
Set it set it set it off

War war war war
Keep the past the future is ours
Man made natural disaster
Blocking out all of the sun
Supermen and mitsi turbo
Speed agility super strength
Wipe the blood of those knuckles
Spark it give me two’s on that

War war war war
I want to declare a war
True say blud that when we ride
We don’t stop for nobody
The Africans and the Bengalis
He knows all the rude boys
Reebok Nike Adidas Puma
“Rer rer rer, this shit is long”
It’s all getting, quite highly charged
Get out the way, or get fucked up

We dance to the sound of sirens
We dance to the sound
And to think, that these hands
Could work wonders, with their touch
Listening, to dead singers, in your room
In 98

We dance to the sound of sirens

We dance to the sound

The lyrics themselves connote themes of conflict and violence, and combined with the loud unique sound of the songs leaves the gap for many ideas to come through and the potential to make an extremely effective music video. It is with the lyrics connoting war and violence combined with the loud sounds from the music that a very quick tempo and themes related to violence can be made, this has therefore given us a springboard for our music video and plans and ideas can begin to be drawn up. The song also has an electro element around it, with common places that it would be played being at raves or parties, this not only adds to the high tempo, but also allows connotations to be made with target audiences as images such as this one on the left. The bright colours and hectic atmosphere are both elements that could be added to our music video. Yet on the topic of war and the slow and melancholy intro to the song a desolate or destroyed setting could be used to portray the effects of war whilst the idea of violence being portrayed between two or more characters could still occur in the area.
